Configuring and Using Safari with The Tunneler

Safari is Apple's web browser, and is the default web browser for OS X. Safari does not have its own proxy configuration settings, rather, it uses the system's proxy settings, which are controlled using the System Preferences application.

Manual Safari Configuration

To manually configure your Safari browser, please follow the instructions below. Note that since Safari uses the System network preferences, all applications that also pay attention to the system preferences (like most Apple applications) will also use the Tunneler.

  1. First, have the MetroPipe Tunneler Software Installed and Connected.
  2. Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  3. Click the Network Icon to bring up your Network preferences.
  4. Select your active connection (at the top of the list with a green indicator), then press the Configure button at the bottom of the list.
  5. Select the Proxies tab.
  6. We need to configure the HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Gopher and SOCKS proxy settings. To do this, check the box next to the proxy, then fill in the server blanks with the following information:

Proxy Type Proxy Host Proxy Port
HTTP localhost 8080
HTTPS/SSL localhost 8080
FTP localhost 8080
Gopher localhost 8080

next...

  1. Click Apply Now to save your configuration, and close System Preferences.
  2. Safari should now send its traffic through the Tunnel. To test this, please go to IPSpy

to test your connection. If The Scanner says you have passed the tests, then your Tunneler is up and running, and you've configured Safari properly. If The Scanner says you failed any of the tests, or you receive other errors that prevent the page from loading, please contact MetroPipe Customer Support.

Important Notes

  • These proxy configurations will affect any application that pays attention to the system's proxy configurations. This includes most Apple applications, like iTunes and System Updater.
  • iTunes will attempt to sign you into the European version of the Music Store, for instance, because our proxies are located Europe. If you wish to temporarily switch the System Proxy settings back to a direct connection, follow the instructions below.

Switching Safari back to a Direct Internet connection

You may need to switch your proxies back to the direct connection in order to access the Internet. To do this, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  2. Click the Network Icon to bring up your Network preferences.
  3. Select your active connection (at the top of the list with a green indicator), then press the Configure button at the bottom of the list.
  4. Select the Proxies tab.
  5. Uncheck the HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Gopher and SOCKS proxies in the server list.
  6. Click the Apply Now button, and close System Preferences.

Safari (and other Interent applications that pay attention to the System Preferences proxy settings) will now connect using a direct

Internet connection.
