Configuring and Using Apple iChat

iChat is included with the Apple operating system. It uses the AOL Instant Messgener network under a licensing agreement with America Online. Therefore, you can use your AIM ID, or your .mac account in order to use iChat.

To set up iChat to use the Tunnel, follow these instructions:

Configuring iChat to use the Tunneler

  1. Start iChat.
  2. iChat will probably sign you in automatically, but we need to be signed out in order to edit the proxy preferences. So, select Offline from the Status Menu located under your nickname in the Buddy List window.
  1. Select Preferences from the iChat Menu, then click on the Accounts icon.
  2. Click the Server Options button.
  3. Check the Connect using proxy box.
  4. Make sure Use System Preferences is off (we need to use an HTTP Proxy, and if System Preferences are used iChat will attempt to use the SOCKS proxy).
  5. Select HTTP from the Protocol dropdown menu.
  6. Enter 127.0.0.1 into the Server box, and 8080 into the Port blank.
  7. Click the OK button (you won't need a username or password).
  8. Now select Available from the Status Menu located under your nickname in the Buddy List window. iChat should now connect - and you'll be protected through the Tunneler!

Remember to turn on the Tunneler before you start iChat, or else you will not be able to connect to the chat networks. If you wish to use iChat without the Tunneler, follow these steps:

Reconfiguring iChat to use a Direct Connection

  1. Start Trillian.
  2. Select Offline from the Status Menu located under your nickname in the Buddy List window.
  3. Select Preferences from the iChat Menu, then click on the Accounts icon.
  4. Click the Server Options button.
  5. Uncheck the Connect using proxy box.
  6. Click OK to save your changes.
  7. Select Available from the Status Menu located under your nickname in the Buddy List window. iChat should now connect. Remember that you're not anonymous or encrypted through the Tunneler.
