Getting Connected

From MetroPipe WIKI

Your computer connects to the Tunneler service with a program that you run on your machine. This program authenticates you to the network, and creates the encrypted tunnels to our Proxy services. We use standard SSH Servers, so you may use our MetroPipe Tunneler software or another third party SSH client.

We recommend using the MetroPipe Tunneler Software that we provide and support. Although advanced users may prefer to run their own clients. Since we use the OpenSSH there are many third party clients available on all platforms. (See: Third Party Tunneler Clients section below.)

Third Party Clients

Advanced users may wish to run their own SSH clients to connect to the Tunneler service. We recommend this for power users only who know what they are doing. Many already run ssh client applications, and do not wish to run another, but instead just create another profile for the tunneler service in their existing ssh client. Windows users whom use the SSH Program called Putty on a regular basis would want to do this.

Connection Issues

  • Make sure the Metropipe tunneler is running.

  • Firewals - You may connect to the Tunneler service using ports 443 or 22, please instruct your firewall application to allow connections to these ports from your Tunneler client.

Firewall Configuration

  • Proxies - You may be:
    • Stuck behind a firewall, with only Proxy access to the internet. Many Third Party Tunneler Service compatible programs do support Proxy access to the Tunneler Service. See the Alternative Tunneler Software Configuration Page for some programs to accomplish this.
    • Wish to add an additional layer of anonymity and connect to the Tunneler Service via another Proxy server or service. This can be done with programs on the Alternative Tunneler Software Configuration Page. In this case the Tunneler Service would not see your machine connecting to it, but instead another Proxy servers machine IP. Anonymity can be increased using layers like this.
